Wednesday, July 30

WEDNESDAY 7/30:

The team met with Kennedy Chabwera & Violet from CCAP (Central Church of Africa Presbyterian) Nkhoma Youth Ministries. They have been working with the youth (defined as ages 3 to 35 years old) in the education of sexual relations and AIDS. One of the issues that has been affecting the community is the pregnancy of young women who then drop out of school.  Unfortunately AIDS has seen a recent increase in spreading in the ages of approximately 14 to 21 years of age.

After the great meeting with Kennedy & Violet, the team hiked Mt. Nkhoma lead by a local dog and 5 children from a local village. The views and scenery were inspiring and provided a great perspective of the villages located in the valley below. The meeting with the 5 local children had Gods hands all over it. We missed our turn on the path towards the mountain and happen to run into these 5 children. With the help of Peter our driver who interpreted to them, the children excitedly showed us the way.....of course bare footed. Once we reached the guesthouse (about 1/2 way up), we stopped & had lunch. We just happen to have enough food and water to share lunch with the children who sat with us.

After lunch Pat & Jan journeyed back down the mountain to take a tour of Nkhoma hospital (270 beds!). They met with Sam Kabota (head of pediatric ward) & medical director Dr. Terhaar.  They were able to visit the labor & delivery room as well as the quarters where they nursed the premature babies.  They were informed that there has been an increase in diabetes and hypertension due to poor diet.

Overall very exciting advancements are happening and showing great success in the region.  It is all happening NOW!  Momentum is growing and moving in a wonderful direction.  Praise God!
